Celsius to Fahrenheit Converter
Turn a Celsius reading into Fahrenheit in one step. Most of the world quotes weather, oven settings and body temperature in Celsius, while the United States sticks to Fahrenheit, so travellers, cooks and anyone reading an American recipe need this pairing often. Type a temperature in degrees Celsius and the tool returns the Fahrenheit value, with a reference table for the figures people check most. Use it to read a forecast before a US trip, set an oven that a recipe gives in the other scale, or make sense of a fever measured on a Celsius thermometer.
Common Celsius to Fahrenheit values
| Celsius | Fahrenheit |
|---|---|
| 0 °C | 32 °F |
| 10 °C | 50 °F |
| 20 °C | 68 °F |
| 37 °C | 98.6 °F |
| 50 °C | 122 °F |
| 100 °C | 212 °F |
| 200 °C | 392 °F |
How to convert
- Start with the temperature in degrees Celsius.
- Multiply that number by 9/5, which is the same as 1.8.
- Add 32 to the result; this offset accounts for the two scales having different zero points.
- The figure you now have is the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit.
- A quick head trick: double the Celsius value and add 30. For 20°C that gives roughly 70°F, close to the exact 68°F.
°F = °C × 9/5 + 32
Fahrenheit and Celsius are both affine scales: one degree Celsius spans 1.8 Fahrenheit degrees, and the zero marks differ. Stretching the Celsius figure by 9/5 fixes the size of the degree, then adding 32 lines up the zero points so that freezing water reads 32°F. Skipping the 32 gives a wrong answer because the scales do not share an origin.
- °C
- the temperature in degrees Celsius you start with
- 9/5
- the ratio of a Fahrenheit degree to a Celsius degree, equal to 1.8
- 32
- the Fahrenheit reading at the freezing point of water
Worked example
A summer afternoon reading of 25°C is 25 multiplied by 9/5, which is 45, plus 32, giving 77°F. A warm bath at 40°C works out at 40 times 1.8 (that is 72) plus 32, so 104°F.
Key facts
- Water freezes at 0°C, which is 32°F.
- Water boils at 100°C, equal to 212°F.
- Normal body temperature is about 37°C, or 98.6°F.
- At -40 the two scales meet: -40°C is exactly -40°F.
Tips
- For everyday weather, the double-and-add-30 shortcut lands within a couple of degrees and needs no calculator.
- When following a US recipe, convert the oven temperature first and write it on the page so you set it right.
Frequently asked questions
What is 20°C in Fahrenheit?+
20°C is 20 × 1.8 + 32, which equals 68°F, a mild room temperature.
Why add 32 rather than just scaling?+
The Fahrenheit scale puts the freezing point of water at 32 degrees, not zero, so the offset shifts every value up by that amount after the 9/5 stretch.
What body temperature counts as normal?+
Around 37°C, which converts to 98.6°F. A reading climbing past about 38°C (100.4°F) is usually treated as a fever.
Is the conversion exact?+
Yes. The relationship °F = °C × 9/5 + 32 is a fixed definition, so the only rounding comes from the decimal places you choose to display.
Things to watch
- Do not multiply by 1.8 and stop; without the +32 offset every Celsius reading converts wrongly.
