Day of the week calculator

Almost nobody remembers the day of the week they were born on, yet the calendar settles it exactly.

The day of the week comes straight from the calendar date.

Enter any date and this names the weekday it fell on, says whether that was a weekday or a weekend, and shows which day the same date lands on this year and next so you can plan around a birthday. It works for any date, not just a birth: a wedding, a first day at work, a historic event or a future appointment all return the right weekday. The maths is the plain rule of the Gregorian calendar, the system in civil use across the world, so the answer is the one the calendar itself gives.

How it works

  1. Type in the date you are curious about, in full day, month and year.
  2. The calculator reads the weekday straight from the calendar and names it.
  3. It then flags the date as a weekday or a weekend.
  4. Two more lines show which weekday that same date falls on in the current year and the year after, so the next birthday is easy to place.

weekday = position of the date within the Gregorian week, 0 for Sunday to 6 for Saturday

Every calendar date maps to exactly one of seven weekdays. The calculator counts from a fixed reference point using the Gregorian rules for month lengths and leap years, then takes the result modulo seven to land on a weekday. Because a common year leaves a one-day remainder over a whole number of weeks and a leap year leaves two, the same date drifts forward by one weekday most years and by two across a leap day.

date
the day, month and year you enter
mod 7
the seven-day week the result wraps around
leap rule
years divisible by 4, except centuries not divisible by 400

How a fixed date drifts through the week

After one common year +1 weekday 365 days is 52 weeks and 1 day
Across a leap day +2 weekdays 366 days is 52 weeks and 2 days
Full weekday cycle about 5 to 6 years before a date returns to the same weekday
Calendar repeat every 400 years the Gregorian pattern restarts exactly

Worked example

Someone born on 15 May 1995: that day was a Monday. In 2026 their birthday falls on a Friday, and in 2027 it shifts to a Saturday, since most years move a fixed date on by one weekday and a leap year nudges it by two.

Frequently asked questions

How can the calendar tell the day of the week for a date long ago?+

The Gregorian calendar repeats on a fixed 400-year cycle, so every date has one correct weekday. The tool applies that rule directly rather than guessing, which is why it works for dates centuries back.

Why does my birthday move to a different day each year?+

A common year is 365 days, which is 52 weeks plus one day, so a fixed date steps forward one weekday each year. A leap year adds a second day, so the date jumps by two whenever 29 February sits between the two birthdays.

What happens for a 29 February birthday?+

In a year without a 29th the calculator rolls the date to 1 March to show a weekday, since that is where the calendar lands the day. The true anniversary returns in the next leap year.

Does it cover dates before 1900 or after 2100?+

Yes. The proleptic Gregorian calendar extends the same rule in both directions, so historic and far-future dates both return a valid weekday.
